What are the Important Aspects of Laser Cutting Leather?

Today, I will be sharing the aspects of working on leather material with Redsail laser machines.

Laser Power

It is suggested to lower the power of diode lasers during engraving on leather. However, a low-power laser might fail to perform a through cut in a single pass. Whereas a high-energy leather CO2 laser machine with 40W can perform a clean cut on the leather in a single cut.

When operating these high-powered lasers, remember to wear goggles that are appropriate for the wavelength of the laser.

Cutting Speed

Apart from producing a clean cut, a high-powered laser can support rapid cutting (the higher the power, the faster the cutting speed). Thus, it will efficiently shorten the production cycle time.

Furthermore, the laser-cutting speed will be also affected by the thickener of the leather you are cutting. As the thickness increases, the cutting speed decreases. If laser cutting leather speed is at a very low speed, it will result in charred edges. Therefore, test running is required to find the optimal speed that minimized the charr.

Generally, the suggested laser cutting speed is around 50 mm/sec (2 inches/sec) with a 40W laser against a smooth leather of medium thickness. Whereas, for laser engraving, a speed of 335 mm/sec (14 inches/sec) at a 15 – 20% power setting of a 40W laser is recommended.

Working Area
