What are the types of leather suitable for laser cutting?

Laser cutting of the leather is a crucial process during production, thus, selecting the best suitable leather and laser machine is first in place. Redsail Laser provides premium quality laser machines at attractive prices.

There are many types of leather available in the market and knowing which type of leather is best for your application is crucial. Based on the process of splitting and surface treatment, leather has been categorized into different grades:

Full Grain Leather

Full grain leather is the most premium quality leather available in the market. It is the thickest type of leather as it contains the outer layer of the hide, which is called the ‘grain’. This type of leather is waterproof, which is best suitable for saddlery, utility belts, safety shoes, weapon holsters, etc.

However, having the outer layer intact means that it may have imperfections caused by various wounds or scratches suffered over the lifetime of the animal.

Top Grain Leather

Top-grain leather is like full-grain leather; however, the top layer is sanded off to obtain a smooth surface, without irregularities. This process makes the leather softer and smoother.

However, due to the removal of the top layer, the water-resistant and strength result will be reduced. This type of leather is the perfect choice for polishing and dyeing into different colors.  For example, wallets, handbags, shoes, etc. Therefore, it depends on the application the leather is used for.

Genuine Leather

Genuine leather is also known as corrected leather, it is made of any layer of the hide, and it is comparatively less durable than the top two types of leather. It went through numerous processes to attain a smooth surface that can be dyed or embossed to various accessories. It is usually used in the production of belts, duffle bags, etc.

Split Grain Leather

It is one of the lowest grades of leather that is obtained from the layer just above the flesh. Thus, it is the softest leather with a less dense structure. Normally, it is placed on top of some other materials to give a leathery look. It can be made into shoes, work gloves, handbags, etc.

Bonded Leather

Bonded leather is also reconstituted leather, it is made of layers of scrap leather bonded together. Furthermore, this type of leather is mixed with some polymers, thus it is artificial leather, containing around 10-90% of natural leather.

In conclusion, different types of leather have different properties and are suitable for different applications when processing leather laser machine cutting. Redsail provides the best quality laser machines, which can perform laser cutting and engraving. Contact us now~
